X3 extreme HMIs supporting offshore CO₂ storage in Project Greensand

Project Greensand is a landmark in Europe’s green transition, proving that CO₂ can be captured and stored safely in former North Sea oil and gas fields. After a successful pilot in 2023, Denmark became the first EU country to demonstrate secure offshore CO₂ storage. The project now scales up to remove hundreds of thousands of tons of CO₂ annually, driving Europe toward climate neutrality and showing how innovation can enable a sustainable future.

A visit by the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard, marked an important moment in the Greensand project, where representatives from Tipatek and other project participants were present.

Meeting the offshore challenge

Tipatek, a Danish automation specialist, is a key contributor to this breakthrough. Their challenge was to deliver control and monitoring solutions for this critical infrastructure in harsh marine and offshore environments. These conditions demand exceptional reliability: equipment must withstand extreme weather and vibrations, and any service or replacement is extremely costly due to limited accessibility.

Why X3 extreme HMIs were chosen

When selecting HMIs for the project, Tipatek evaluated other alternatives but ultimately chose Beijer Electronics’ X3 extreme series. The decision was based on the rugged qualities of the X3 extreme panels combined with outstanding value for money. Other options could not match the durability that X3 offers. Designed for demanding environments, X3 extreme HMIs are ideal for offshore applications where downtime is unacceptable.

"When you work in offshore environments, reliability is everything. If a product fails out there, the cost and complexity of replacing it are enormous. That’s why we chose Beijer Electronics’ X3 extreme HMIs, they combine ruggedness with outstanding value for money, and they simply deliver."

Integration with iX software and ERP systems

Tipatek uses X3 extreme HMIs with iX software to communicate with ABB equipment in the control system, providing a powerful and intuitive interface for operators. In addition, X3 extreme web panels are deployed to connect with the ERP system, ensuring seamless integration between operational and business processes. The combination of iX and web technology enables real-time control and efficient project management, which is critical in a complex undertaking like Greensand.

Impact and support that matter

Another decisive factor was the proximity and quality of technical support. In projects of this scale and complexity, fast and competent assistance is vital. Beijer Electronics excels in this area, offering the reassurance that help is always close at hand.

By deploying X3 extreme HMIs, Tipatek ensures operational reliability in one of Europe’s most ambitious climate projects. The solution reduces lifecycle costs through durable hardware, while enabling scalable integration between industrial control and enterprise systems. This collaboration demonstrates how technology and innovation can deliver sustainable solutions with global impact.
